At RWS, we excel in handling diverse sites with distinctive challenges. Come explore and gain insights from our wealth of expertise.

Can you describe the process of selecting and sourcing the sandstone for these sculptures?

The Sculptors had the process of selecting and sourcing the sandstone for these sculptures with careful consideration of the park’s theme and the desired aesthetic. High-quality sandstone was chosen for its durability and natural appearance. Once selected, the sandstone was quarried, cut, and shaped by skilled artisans to bring the animal sculptures to life. The animal position was also a consideration for the artisans as they needed to create friendly positions for the animals to be on display whilst understanding the functionality of the statues and consideration for child friendly displays.

What challenges did the construction team face when installing these sculptures, given their unique designs and materials?

Installing these unique sandstone sculptures presented a few challenges. Their intricate designs required precise placement and anchoring to ensure stability. The weight of the sculptures also had to be carefully considered to prevent any safety hazards. Each sculpture is about 1-3tonnes, there are 8 in total sculptures which took 12 weeks of delicate sculpting. The construction team had to devise innovative solutions for transportation, lifting, and securing these sculptures in a way that preserved both their artistic integrity and structural stability, which they managed to complete in 1 working day.

How were the safety and durability aspects of the sculptures ensured to meet playground standards?

Safety and durability were paramount in this project. The sculptures were engineered to meet or exceed playground safety standards, including load-bearing capacity, slip resistance, and impact resistance. Rigorous testing and inspections were conducted to verify their compliance. The animal position was a consideration for the artisans as they needed to create friendly positions for the animals to be on display whilst understanding the functionality for child friendly displays. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspections are carried out to ensure the sculptures continue to meet these standards over time.

What maintenance requirements are associated with sandstone sculptures in an outdoor environment, and how are they addressed?

Sandstone sculptures in an outdoor environment require regular maintenance to preserve their beauty and integrity. Maintenance tasks include cleaning, sealing, and inspecting for cracks or damage. Additionally, a schedule for vegetation management around the sculptures is implemented to prevent overgrowth, which could harm the sculptures over time. An annual maintenance plan is in place to address these needs systematically.

Have these sculptures received positive feedback from the children and families using the play park?

Yes, these sculptures have been a tremendous hit among children and families using the play park. Their whimsical and artistic designs have added an extra layer of enjoyment to the park experience. Many visitors have expressed their admiration for the sculptures, and they have become popular focal points for photos and play.
